What you'd actually do
The work is filling shelves, serving on the till, helping customers find things, keeping the store tidy and handling deliveries and stock. Reliability, friendliness and the willingness to muck in across tasks matter, along with being on your feet and lifting through a shift, especially during busy or restocking periods.
Shifts can include early mornings, evenings, weekends and bank holidays, the work is physical and on your feet, and pay usually starts around the minimum wage. It is a common first or flexible job that fits around studies, and many people build long careers in retail from here.
No qualifications are needed and you learn on the job, with training on tills, stock and customer service. Apprenticeships in retail are available, and experience can lead to team leader, supervisor or store management roles.
