AI & the future of this job

The saving grace is domain-specific accuracy: in sectors like pharmaceuticals, aerospace, medical devices, and heavy industry, a single documentation error carries serious regulatory or safety consequences, and human accountability still matters enormously there. Even so, the volume of junior technical writing work is contracting, and the industry is not going to reverse that trend.

Over the next five years, AI tools will absorb most of the routine drafting, editing, and formatting that junior technical writers currently spend the majority of their time on. Headcounts in documentation teams are already shrinking at technology-adjacent companies, and this will spread into manufacturing, engineering services, and healthcare products.
