What you'd actually do

As a veterinarian, you care for animals of all kinds. You might work in a small animal clinic treating dogs and cats, on a farm helping cattle and sheep, in a zoo or wildlife centre, or in research. Every day brings different animals and different problems to solve.

You'll examine animals to find out what's wrong, use equipment like X-rays, give medicines and perform operations, and explain to owners how to care for their animals. You need to be good with your hands, quick-thinking, and able to stay calm when an animal is in pain or distressed. You'll also comfort owners who are worried about their pets, and sometimes you'll have to help animals that are suffering to die peacefully.
