About this course

Aero-mechanical engineering combines the principles of aeronautical engineering with the broader discipline of mechanical engineering, producing graduates who can work on the design, analysis, and development of aircraft, aerospace systems, and a wide range of other technically demanding engineering applications. The field draws on fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, structural mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and control systems, developing the kind of multi-disciplinary technical thinking that is central to modern engineering practice.

At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme is taught within one of the UK's leading engineering schools and combines a strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals with specialist modules in aerodynamics, lightweight structures, propulsion, and flight mechanics. You will develop rigorous analytical and mathematical skills alongside practical laboratory and design experience. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study at a partner institution overseas and develop an international perspective on engineering education and practice.

Strathclyde's location in Glasgow, alongside its strong industry connections, means the programme is rooted in the realities of engineering employment as well as academic rigour.

The skills developed in aero-mechanical engineering are valued well beyond the aerospace sector itself. Aerodynamics and lightweight structural design have direct applications in automotive, marine, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing, and Strathclyde's programme reflects this breadth.

Graduates are well placed for roles in the aerospace industry, automotive engineering, defence, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing, as well as in engineering consultancy and project management. Many go on to postgraduate study, including MEng or PhD programmes, particularly if they wish to pursue research or senior technical roles.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a br…

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plenty …
