About this course

Agriculture is the oldest and most fundamental of the applied sciences, concerned with the production of food, fibre, and other biological materials in ways that meet human needs while managing the land, water, and living resources on which production depends. Modern agriculture operates at the intersection of biology, chemistry, economics, engineering, and environmental science, and the challenges it faces are among the most consequential in the world: feeding a growing global population in the context of climate change, declining biodiversity, soil degradation, and the need to radically reduce agriculture's environmental footprint. At the same time, agriculture in the UK is being reshaped by changes in subsidy regimes, trade relationships, and the growing emphasis on ecosystem services alongside food production.

At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time BSc equips you to tackle these challenges across the full scope of agriculture and agricultural production systems. You will develop a detailed understanding of crop production, livestock management, soil science, agronomy, farm business management, agricultural policy, and the environmental dimensions of farming, building both the biological knowledge and the practical and commercial awareness needed to operate effectively in the agricultural sector. Aberystwyth's location in mid-Wales gives the degree a distinctive rural and pastoral character, and the university has deep connections with Welsh and British agriculture that inform the programme's real-world orientation.

Agriculture graduates enter careers as farm managers, agricultural consultants, agronomists, rural surveyors, land agents, food chain analysts, policy advisers, and environmental land managers. The breadth of technical, scientific, and business knowledge the degree develops opens pathways into the food and agribusiness sectors, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, conservation organisations, and international development roles in food security and agricultural development. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in agricultural science, food science, environmental management, rural business, or veterinary science, building specialist expertise for advanced professional or research careers.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport li…
