Animal Behaviour

Animal behaviour is the scientific study of why and how animals act as they do, drawing on evolutionary biology, ecology, neuroscience, physiology and psychology to explain everything from foraging and mating to social organisation and communication. It is a discipline with deep roots in both field naturalism and laboratory science, and its findings have practical implications across animal welfare, conservation biology, veterinary practice and the management of captive and wild animal populations.

At Aberystwyth University you will build a solid foundation of scientific skills through the BSc Animal Behaviour programme, which is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, a recognised mark of quality in the biological sciences. You will study the major theoretical frameworks of the discipline, including natural selection, kin selection, game theory and the neuroscience of behaviour, alongside the observational, experimental and statistical methods used to study behaviour rigorously in both field and laboratory settings. You will develop the ability to design and conduct investigations, critically evaluate evidence and communicate scientific findings effectively.

The programme runs over three years full time.

Graduates from animal behaviour programmes move into careers in conservation, wildlife management, zoological parks, animal welfare organisations, research, veterinary support and environmental consultancy.
