About this course

Astrophysics applies the principles of physics to astronomical phenomena, seeking to understand the nature and behaviour of stars, galaxies, black holes, dark matter, and the universe itself. It is a discipline that confronts some of the most profound questions in science, from the origins of the cosmos and the mechanisms of stellar evolution to the search for planets that might harbour life. Astrophysicists use observations from ground-based and space telescopes, theoretical modelling, and computational simulation to build and test their understanding of the universe, working at the cutting edge of human knowledge.

At Cardiff University this three-year full-time programme applies the principles of physics to astronomical phenomena in an institution with a strong research profile in gravitational wave astronomy, galaxies, and star formation. You will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and special relativity alongside the specific methods and content of astrophysics, including stellar physics, galactic dynamics, cosmology, and observational techniques. The programme has a focus on research, introducing you to the ways in which astrophysical knowledge is built and tested and developing the analytical and computational skills that contemporary research in the field requires.

Astrophysics graduates are highly sought-after outside as well as within academic science, valued for their rigorous quantitative and analytical skills. Outside academia, astrophysics graduates move into data science, financial analysis, software engineering, satellite technology, defence, and consultancy, where the problem-solving and mathematical abilities developed through the degree are directly applicable.
