About this course

Astrophysics is concerned with understanding the universe beyond our atmosphere, from the planets and moons of the solar system to stars in all stages of their life cycles, the vast structures of galaxies, and the large-scale architecture of the cosmos itself. It applies the tools of physics and mathematics to questions that have captivated human curiosity for millennia: how stars are born, live and die, what dark matter and dark energy are, how the universe began and how it may end. As telescopes and detection technologies have advanced, astrophysics has become one of the most observationally rich and theoretically exciting areas of science.

At Aberystwyth University, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year that builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed for degree-level study, making the programme accessible to students who need to consolidate their preparation before entering the main course. The degree then covers the broad disciplines of astronomy, including cosmology and galactic astronomy, the solar system, gas giants and terrestrial worlds, and the life cycles of stars, from red giants and white dwarfs to neutron stars and quasars. You will develop quantitative skills in data analysis, computational methods and physical modelling alongside a thorough grounding in the physics that underlies all of these topics.

Graduates of astrophysics programmes are highly numerate, skilled in data analysis and experienced in working with complex quantitative models, making them attractive to employers well beyond academic research. Career routes include roles in space science, defence, telecommunications, finance, data science, software engineering and scientific computing, as well as research careers in universities and national and international observatories. Further study at master's or doctoral level in astrophysics, physics or a related field is the typical route for those drawn to research careers in astronomy and space science.
