About this course

Software engineering applies systematic, disciplined and measurable approaches to the development, operation and maintenance of software. Where computer science provides the theoretical and mathematical foundations of computing, software engineering focuses on the professional practice of building software systems that are reliable, efficient, maintainable and fit for purpose in real-world conditions. It encompasses requirements analysis, system design, programming, testing, project management, quality assurance and the collaborative processes that large software development projects require.

At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time programme allows you to explore both the heart of computer science and the principles and practices of software engineering, developing your ability to construct not just functional but well-designed, robust systems. You will study programming, algorithms, data structures, software architecture, testing methodologies, agile and other development processes, databases, and the human factors that affect how software is designed and used. Heriot-Watt's strong industry connections and emphasis on applied learning prepare you for the professional environment in which software is actually developed, and the four-year honours structure gives you the time to develop genuine depth across the full range of topics.

Graduates of computer science with software engineering programmes are in sustained demand across virtually every sector of the economy. Career paths include software engineer, software developer, systems architect, technical lead, quality assurance engineer, development operations engineer and technical project manager, in technology companies, financial services, healthcare, retail, defence, government and start-ups. The systematic thinking and problem-solving skills developed transfer well into technical management and consulting roles.

Further study at master's or doctoral level in software engineering, computer science or a related field is available for those who want to specialise further or pursue research careers.

Highly recommend
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit othe…

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is a brilli…
