About this course

Computer science provides the theoretical foundations and practical methods that make modern software and systems possible. Artificial intelligence extends that foundation into some of the most consequential questions in computing today: how can machines learn from data, reason under uncertainty, recognise patterns in images and language, and make decisions in complex environments? Studying these two areas together gives you both the rigorous grounding that underpins all of computing and the specialist knowledge to work at the frontier of one of the field's most rapidly growing domains.

At the University of York, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in industry and a year abroad, along with a work placement, giving you substantial real-world and international experience alongside your academic study. You will explore how computational systems can communicate, learn and reason, and you will examine the social and ethical implications of artificial intelligence for individuals, organisations and society as a whole. Core computer science topics, including algorithms, data structures, software engineering, programming and systems architecture, provide the foundation.

AI modules then build on that base, covering machine learning, neural networks, computer vision, natural language processing and the theoretical underpinnings of intelligent systems. York's approach combines theory with practice, and the placement year connects you directly with industry partners working in AI and software development.

Graduates of this programme are well positioned for careers in software engineering, machine learning research, data science, robotics, computer vision and AI product development. The sandwich year experience means most students leave with professional contacts and a track record that employers value. Further study at master's or doctoral level in artificial intelligence, machine learning or computer science is a natural progression for those drawn to research or advanced specialisation.
