About this course

Computer systems engineering is the discipline that bridges software development, hardware design and network architecture, combining the theoretical foundations of computing with the practical engineering skills to build and maintain the systems that underpin modern digital life. It draws on computing science, mathematics, electrical engineering and systems theory to address the design, construction, implementation and maintenance of the hardware and software components of computing systems, from embedded devices and microcontrollers to large-scale networked systems and intelligent devices.

At Royal Holloway, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial practical and international experience alongside your academic study. You will develop a strong grounding in the science and technology of computing systems, engaging with both the theoretical principles of computation and the practical skills of software and hardware engineering. The programme also explores creative technologies and their role in multimedia industries, interactive computing and the ways in which computing is changing how people interact with both digital systems and the physical world.

Graduates from computer systems engineering programmes work across the technology sector in roles including systems engineer, embedded systems developer, network engineer, software developer, hardware engineer, cloud architect and technology consultant. The breadth of the degree means that graduates are not restricted to a single technical specialism, and the combination of software, hardware and systems thinking makes them valuable in engineering teams working on complex integrated projects. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in computer science, embedded systems, cybersecurity or systems engineering.
