About this course

Computing science is the discipline that underlies the digital world, concerned with the theory of computation, the design of algorithms, the architecture of systems, and the software engineering practices that translate ideas into working programmes. It is a field of extraordinary breadth and consequence, touching every sector of modern life from healthcare and finance to education and the arts, and it continues to develop rapidly as new challenges and opportunities emerge from artificial intelligence, distributed systems, cybersecurity, and the proliferation of digital devices.

At Aberdeen you will develop a thorough grounding in computing science across four years of full-time study. The programme covers programming, data structures and algorithms, software engineering, computer architecture, databases, operating systems, networks, and the theoretical foundations of computation. As you progress, you will develop expertise in more specialist areas and have the opportunity to engage with current research challenges in areas such as machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, or cybersecurity.

The four-year structure allows the degree to reach an advanced level that a three-year programme cannot match, and the year abroad gives you the opportunity to study computing at a partner university in another country and to develop an international perspective on the discipline and its applications.

Graduates are in demand across virtually every sector of the economy, in roles including software development, data engineering, systems architecture, cybersecurity, machine learning engineering, and technology consulting. Computing science graduates work in e-commerce, fintech, healthcare technology, telecommunications, government, and research, among many other fields. Many continue to postgraduate study or research in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related field.
