Education studies is not teacher training, though it prepares you to understand teaching profoundly. It is a discipline that examines how learning happens, why educational systems are organised as they are, who has access to what kinds of education, and what the consequences of educational policy and practice are for individuals and societies. It draws on psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, and policy analysis to address questions that are as urgent now as they have ever been: how do we create conditions in which all children can flourish, and what stands in the way?

At Swansea University, this three-year full-time BA is research-informed throughout, meaning your learning is shaped by active scholarly inquiry rather than settled consensus. You will develop the knowledge and skills needed for a wide range of careers in the field of education and beyond, examining how children learn, how schools and other educational institutions function, how inequality is reproduced or challenged through education, and how policy decisions made in government shape what happens in classrooms. You will engage with Welsh education policy as well as broader UK and international debates, situating your studies in a specific national context while developing transferable analytical skills.

With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, this degree is designed for students who are curious about education as a social institution and who want to develop the analytical tools to understand and contribute to it. Graduates pursue careers in teaching, educational administration, youth work, social work, community education, educational research, policy, the charity sector, children's services, and international development. Many go on to Initial Teacher Training, including the PGCE, either in primary or secondary settings, or to postgraduate study in education policy, educational psychology, or a related field.
