About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering underpins the modern world in ways that are easy to overlook. Every communications network, power system, medical device, consumer gadget and industrial machine depends on the principles and technologies that this discipline develops and refines. Electrical engineering deals with the generation, transmission and use of electrical power; electronic engineering focuses on the circuits, signals and devices that process information and control systems.

Together they form one of the most dynamic and practically important fields of engineering.

At Edinburgh Napier University, this part-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different international context and broaden your professional and personal perspective. You will cover topics including circuit theory, signals and systems, digital electronics, power systems, control engineering, microprocessors, telecommunications and embedded systems. The degree develops both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills that engineers need, with laboratory work forming an important part of your learning.

You will develop the ability to analyse, design and test electrical and electronic systems, and to approach engineering problems with the systematic rigour that characterises good professional practice.

Graduates move into a wide range of sectors. Power generation and distribution, telecommunications, consumer electronics, defence, aerospace, automotive engineering, robotics and the rapidly growing renewables sector all offer significant opportunities. Postgraduate study is also a natural route for those who want to specialise or pursue research in areas such as power electronics, embedded systems or communications engineering.
