About this course

Engineering physics is the application of the ideas, methods, and rigour of physics to the practical challenges of engineering. It is neither pure physics, which primarily seeks to understand the universe, nor conventional engineering, which primarily seeks to build practical systems, but sits productively between the two, asking how physical principles can be applied to design and improve the technologies and systems that the world depends on. The discipline is well suited to people who love the elegance of physical theory but who also want to engage with real-world problems.

At Loughborough University this three-year, full-time BSc applies physical principles to engineering and technology, drawing on Loughborough's well-established engineering expertise to help you develop solutions to real-world problems. You will build a strong foundation in classical and modern physics, including mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and solid-state physics, alongside the mathematical methods and engineering principles needed to apply this knowledge in practical contexts. The programme benefits from Loughborough's exceptional research infrastructure and its close connections to industry, giving both the academic and applied dimensions of the degree genuine depth.

Graduates of engineering physics work in a remarkably wide range of sectors. The combination of deep physical understanding and engineering orientation is valued in energy technology, semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, aerospace, defence, medical technology, telecommunications, and scientific instrumentation. Many move into roles in research and development, technical design, systems engineering, and scientific consulting.

The analytical and problem-solving skills the degree develops are also valued in finance, data science, and technology management. Further study at Masters or doctoral level is a well-trodden path for those who want to specialise in a particular area of applied physics or engineering science, and the degree provides strong foundations for both professional qualification and academic research.
