Instrumentation and control engineering is a specialist branch of engineering concerned with the design, development, and maintenance of systems that measure, monitor, and control physical processes. It is fundamental to industrial operations across energy, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food processing, water treatment, and manufacturing, where the precise measurement of temperature, pressure, flow, and other variables, and the automatic control of those variables within specified limits, is essential to safe, efficient, and compliant operation. The discipline draws on electrical and electronic engineering, applied mathematics, signal processing, and systems theory.

At Teesside University, this part-time programme provides the technical grounding in electrical and control engineering principles needed for professional practice in instrumentation and control. You will study electrical circuit theory, including voltage, current, power, resistance, inductance, and capacitance, alongside the analysis of electrical circuits and an understanding of simple analogue and digital circuits. Kirchhoff's Laws, time-varying voltages and currents, and the effects on inductors and capacitors are all covered, providing the mathematical and physical foundations for understanding more complex instrumentation and control systems.
