Journalism is at its best a public service: it investigates, verifies, explains and holds power to account, giving citizens the information they need to make sense of their world. It is a craft that demands intellectual curiosity, rigorous research, the ability to find and communicate stories that matter, and the discipline to do this under pressure and to deadline. Journalism is also changing rapidly, as digital platforms transform how audiences consume news and how journalists gather and present it, making adaptability and digital literacy as important as traditional storytelling skills.

At Coventry University, this three-year full-time degree is designed to develop the full range of skills a modern journalist needs. You will build your research and investigative capabilities, your ability to write clearly and compellingly for different audiences and formats, and your practical skills in broadcast, digital and print journalism. A sandwich year placement and a work placement are both embedded in the programme, giving you substantial experience in professional journalism environments.

A year abroad is also available, which broadens your perspective and gives you experience of different journalistic traditions and contexts. Throughout the degree, a focus on critical thinking and in-depth storytelling distinguishes the approach from simple news writing, preparing you for journalism that makes a real impact.

You will develop the ability to find and verify information, to identify stories of genuine public interest, to work across multiple platforms, and to communicate complex issues clearly and accessibly. Ethical and legal frameworks for journalism are covered, alongside the practical skills of production.

Graduates move into print, broadcast and digital journalism, news agencies, documentary production, public relations and communications, content creation, and media management. The research and writing skills developed through journalism training are also valued in a wide range of other sectors. Postgraduate study in journalism, media or communications is a well-established pathway for those who want to specialise further.
