Journalism is at the heart of how democratic societies function. It gathers, investigates, verifies, and communicates the information that citizens need to understand the world and hold power to account. In an era of information overload, social media, and increasing pressure on public trust in news, the skills of professional journalism, rigorous reporting, ethical judgement, strong writing, and the ability to work across multiple media platforms, have never been more important.

At Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, this four-year full-time BA (Hons) is an intensive and practical degree that equips you with the knowledge and skills for a career in journalism or related industries. You will develop critical theoretical understanding of journalism alongside specialist production skills across multiple media, including print, broadcast, and digital formats. The multimedia approach reflects the reality of contemporary journalism, where practitioners are expected to report, write, film, record, edit, and publish across platforms as a matter of course.

Analytical and investigative skills sit alongside the production competencies, ensuring that you graduate able to think critically about journalism's role in society as well as to practise it effectively. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you an international perspective on how journalism operates in different media cultures and regulatory environments.

RGU's Aberdeen location gives you access to a distinct regional media landscape, including journalism connected to the energy, maritime, and public sectors that are central to the north-east of Scotland.

Graduates go on to careers in print, online, broadcast, and magazine journalism, as well as in public relations, communications, content creation, and media management. Many build freelance careers or move into specialist roles in areas such as political reporting, business journalism, or investigative work. Postgraduate study in journalism, media, or communications is also a well-established route for those who want to develop a particular specialism.
