About this course

Mathematical physics sits at the boundary between two of the deepest intellectual disciplines: mathematics, concerned with abstract structure, proof, and pattern, and physics, concerned with understanding the fundamental laws of nature. The two have been intertwined since Newton, and the exchange between them has driven some of the most profound advances in human knowledge, from the development of quantum mechanics to the theory of general relativity. Mathematical physics takes the relationship between these fields seriously at a high level of rigour, developing the capacity to work with the sophisticated mathematical structures that modern physical theory requires.

At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time programme develops both mathematical depth and physical insight across a curriculum that takes both disciplines seriously rather than treating one as merely a tool for the other. You will study analysis, algebra, differential equations, and more advanced mathematical topics alongside classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and special and general relativity.
