About this course

Mathematical, statistical and actuarial sciences together form one of the most professionally focused and analytically demanding degree combinations available. Mathematics provides the formal foundations for abstract reasoning and quantitative modelling. Statistics develops the tools for collecting, analysing and interpreting data and for drawing valid inferences under uncertainty.

Actuarial science applies both to the specific problems of risk, insurance, pensions and long-term financial planning, using mathematical and statistical methods to quantify uncertainty and price it appropriately.

At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time programme is designed to develop comprehensive expertise across all three disciplines simultaneously, producing graduates with a genuinely integrated understanding of how mathematics, statistics and actuarial methods relate to each other and to the real-world challenges of finance, insurance and the wider economy. The programme offers the opportunity to gain exemptions from Core Principles subjects of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries professional examinations, which represents significant progress towards the actuarial qualification that professional practice requires. You will develop rigorous analytical skills alongside a sound understanding of the insurance, pensions, economic and financial sectors in which these skills are most directly applied.

With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this is a highly competitive programme. Graduates from mathematical, statistical and actuarial sciences are among the most sought-after in the financial services industry. Many go directly into actuarial roles in insurance companies, pension funds, investment banks and consultancies, continuing the professional examination process while in employment.
