About this course

Mathematics is the science of pattern, structure and logical reasoning. It develops your ability to think precisely, to construct rigorous arguments and to model complex situations in ways that reveal their underlying order. Whether you are drawn to the beauty of pure mathematical proof or to the power of applied techniques to solve real-world problems, a mathematics degree trains a kind of thinking that is valued across almost every sector of the economy.

At Aston University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside the academic substance of the degree. You will study core areas of pure and applied mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability and statistics, numerical methods and mathematical modelling. The programme develops both your technical fluency and your capacity for rigorous reasoning, and the professional experience you gain through the placement prepares you for the transition from study to career.

Mathematics graduates are among the most employable of all degree holders, and they move into an exceptionally wide range of careers. Finance, banking and insurance are among the largest employers, with actuarial work, investment analysis, risk management and quantitative modelling all drawing heavily on mathematics graduates. Data science, software engineering, operations research, government statistical work, engineering and education are also significant destinations.

The analytical skills and quantitative training of a mathematics degree provide a strong foundation for postgraduate study in mathematics itself, statistics, finance, computer science or a wide range of other disciplines.
