About this course

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines, and it remains central to almost everything that moves, generates power, or requires precision manufacture. It applies the principles of physics, mathematics, and materials science to the analysis, design, development, and maintenance of mechanical systems, from turbine engines and robotics to medical devices and consumer products. Understanding why mechanical systems work, how long they will continue to work, and when and how they will eventually fail are the core questions the discipline addresses.

At Loughborough University, this three-year full-time BEng degree gives you a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, including mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, design, and manufacturing. Loughborough is one of the UK's leading engineering universities, with strong research activity and close connections to the manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and sports engineering industries. You will develop both theoretical understanding and practical engineering skills through design projects, laboratory work, and problem-solving activities that reflect the way professional engineers actually work.

The programme runs over three years, focusing entirely on your academic and engineering development throughout.

Mechanical engineering graduates are among the most employable in any engineering field. The analytical and design skills the degree develops are relevant across an exceptionally wide range of sectors, including automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, robotics, medical technology, and infrastructure. Many graduates move into roles in design engineering, structural analysis, project engineering, manufacturing engineering, and systems development.

The degree also provides a strong foundation for Chartered Engineer status through the relevant professional bodies, and for postgraduate study in mechanical engineering, energy systems, robotics, or a range of specialist fields. The typical entry tariff is 136 points.
