About this course

Media production is the craft of making content for television, film, online platforms and broadcast environments. It encompasses the full production process from idea development and scripting through to camera operation, direction, sound recording, editing and post-production. Studying it seriously means learning not just the technical skills but the professional disciplines, collaborative practices and editorial judgement that distinguish competent media makers from excellent ones.

The industry has changed dramatically with the rise of digital platforms and online video, but the fundamental skills of visual storytelling, production management and post-production remain central.

At Wrexham University, this part-time programme, which includes a foundation year, gives you the opportunity to develop your production skills while managing other commitments. A distinctive feature of the programme is that you work in a real production environment, not just lecture theatres. You will have access to professional TV studios equipped with 4K and high-definition cameras and multi-camera setups, live streaming control rooms, and post-production galleries.

This means your training closely resembles the conditions you will encounter as a professional, and the skills you develop are directly applicable rather than being approximations of real practice. The foundation year provides additional preparation for students who will benefit from a grounding in academic and creative study before moving into the full programme.

You will develop competence across the range of production roles, learning how collaborative teams function and how different skills combine to produce finished content. Project work, both individual and collaborative, is central to the learning experience, and you will build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your capabilities to future employers.

Graduates move into broadcast television, online and streaming content production, corporate video, journalism, social media content creation, post-production, and production management. The combination of technical proficiency and professional experience the programme provides is a strong starting point for a career in a competitive industry.
