Medicine
Medicine is the discipline concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and injury, and with maintaining and restoring health. It is simultaneously a science and a practice, requiring command of a vast and rapidly evolving body of biomedical knowledge alongside the clinical skills, communication, and professional judgement that allow doctors to work effectively with patients. Studying medicine means developing expertise in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, and the major clinical specialties, as well as the ethical and social dimensions of health care, since medicine is practised in a context shaped by inequality, culture, values, and the organisation of health systems.
Cardiff University's medical school has a long-standing reputation for producing excellent clinicians, and the five-year full-time MB BCh programme is grounded in a research-led curriculum that integrates scientific understanding with clinical experience from early in the degree. You will learn through a combination of lectures, small-group tutorials, clinical simulations, and placements in hospitals and community settings across Wales, developing the knowledge and skills required for safe practice. Graduates complete a two-year foundation programme in the NHS before choosing a specialty training pathway. Medicine offers one of the widest ranges of career directions available to any graduate, spanning general practice, hospital medicine in all its specialties from surgery and paediatrics to psychiatry and oncology, research, medical education, public health, and global health. The degree also provides a foundation for careers in medical law, health policy, pharmaceutical medicine, and healthcare management for those who wish to apply their clinical understanding in different contexts.
