Midwifery
Midwifery is a profession centred on supporting women and families through one of the most significant experiences of their lives. Midwives provide expert clinical care across pregnancy, labour, birth and the early postnatal period, drawing on a thorough understanding of physiology, evidence-based practice and the interpersonal skills required to care for people in moments of vulnerability, uncertainty and profound change. Advanced midwifery programmes prepare practitioners who are ready to work across the full scope of midwifery practice from the outset.
At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time programme has been developed in partnership with local NHS trusts, which means clinical placements on different maternity wards are built into the structure. Your time will be equally divided between academic study and practice, ensuring that theory and clinical experience develop together rather than in sequence. This partnership approach means the curriculum reflects the realities of current NHS maternity care, and that you develop the skills and professional confidence expected of a newly qualified registrant.
You will study the science underpinning normal and complex maternity care, including pharmacology, pathophysiology, neonatal care and the recognition and management of obstetric emergencies. Alongside clinical knowledge, you will develop your communication and counselling skills, your understanding of safeguarding and public health, and your capacity to work effectively within and across multidisciplinary teams. Critical reflection on practice and the ability to engage with research evidence are threaded throughout.
On qualifying and registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, you will be eligible to practise as a midwife in a range of settings across the NHS and independent sector. Career pathways include community and hospital-based roles, specialist practice in areas such as bereavement support or high-risk obstetrics, midwifery education, management and leadership. Postgraduate study is available for those wishing to advance into research or specialist clinical roles.
