Midwifery

Midwifery is a profession centred on supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth and the period immediately after, and it demands a distinctive combination of clinical skill, compassionate communication and the ability to work with confidence under pressure. As a discipline, it sits at the intersection of medicine, public health and holistic care, with the midwife playing a central role in one of the most significant experiences in a family's life. This three-year full-time degree at Bangor University prepares you for registration as a midwife in the UK, combining academic study with substantial clinical placement hours throughout the programme.

You will study the physiology of pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period alongside the pathology that requires referral or intervention, developing a thorough understanding of when normal care is appropriate and when escalation is needed. Pharmacology, public health, neonatal care, mental health and the legal and ethical frameworks governing midwifery practice are all woven through the curriculum. Bangor's programme benefits from its location in Wales, with placements across NHS settings in the region including maternity units, community teams and specialist services.

A typical entry tariff of around 136 points is expected. The degree leads to eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council on graduation, a requirement for all practising midwives in the UK.

Most graduates enter NHS employment as registered midwives immediately after completing the degree, working in community or hospital settings. With experience, midwives progress to senior clinical roles, specialist practice in areas such as bereavement support or high-risk obstetrics, education and research. Independent practice and roles in international health are also possibilities for those who wish to work beyond traditional NHS structures.
