Midwifery

Midwifery is a profession centred on one of the most significant experiences in human life: pregnancy, birth and the early weeks of a new family. Midwives are the primary care professionals supporting women and birthing people throughout the entire continuum from pre-pregnancy through labour, birth and the postpartum period, working with newborn infants and their families at a time of great physical and emotional intensity. The role demands clinical expertise, compassionate communication, the ability to make sound judgements under pressure and a commitment to woman-centred care.

At Robert Gordon University this three-year full-time programme prepares you to practise as a skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate midwife, as the current description notes. You will develop theoretical knowledge in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, neonatal care, public health and the evidence base that underpins midwifery practice, alongside the clinical skills required in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. A substantial proportion of the programme is spent in clinical placements across hospital and community settings, where you gain hands-on experience working with women and families under the supervision of qualified practitioners.

Graduating from this programme and registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council qualifies you to practise as a midwife in the UK, with opportunities to work across NHS hospital and community settings, birth centres and independent practice. Career development paths include specialisation in areas such as neonatal care, high-risk pregnancies, public health midwifery and bereavement care, as well as roles in education, research and management. Postgraduate study in midwifery, reproductive health, public health or healthcare leadership is a well-established route for those who want to advance into specialist or academic practice.
