About this course

Physics is the science that probes the deepest structure of reality, from the quantum behaviour of particles to the large-scale architecture of the universe. It is the discipline from which many of the most transformative technologies of the modern world have emerged: lasers, semiconductors, medical imaging, telecommunications, and computing all trace their origins to discoveries in fundamental physics. Studying physics develops not just scientific knowledge but a distinctive way of thinking, combining mathematical rigour with physical intuition and the willingness to engage with problems that at first seem impossibly abstract.

At King's College London this three-year full-time programme provides a robust foundation in both experimental and theoretical physics. You will explore topics such as relativity, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, wave physics, and nuclear physics, building from foundational principles to topics at the frontier of the discipline. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and experience physics in a different educational and cultural environment.

Throughout the degree you will develop key analytical and practical skills, including problem-solving, creative thinking, teamwork, and data analysis, which are among the most transferable capabilities that any degree can provide and which are recognised and valued by employers across a wide range of sectors.

Laboratory work is an important component, developing your experimental skills and your ability to design, conduct, and report investigations.

Graduates of physics programmes pursue careers in research, technology, engineering, data science, finance, energy, computing, science policy, and education, as well as in many other fields where analytical rigour and quantitative fluency are valued. Postgraduate study at Masters or doctoral level is the route for those drawn to research or advanced specialisation.
