About this course

Physics is the foundational science of the natural world, concerned with the laws that govern everything from subatomic particles to the largest structures in the universe. It encompasses classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum theory, relativity, and the computational and mathematical methods that support all of these, developing a way of thinking about the world that combines rigorous quantitative reasoning with creative problem-solving. The skills that physics develops, including mathematical fluency, experimental technique, and the ability to model complex systems, are among the most transferable of any science degree.

At Loughborough University, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of physics across its foundational and contemporary dimensions alongside the practical, experimental, mathematical, and computational skills that the discipline demands. You will study the core principles of classical and modern physics while also building the kind of quantitative reasoning ability that is valued across a wide range of professional contexts. Loughborough is known for its strong engineering and science culture, and the physics programme benefits from the collaborative research environment and high academic standards that this produces.

With a typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points, the programme is accessible to students with strong mathematical and scientific preparation.

Physics graduates are consistently among the most employable of any science discipline. Finance, data science, technology, engineering, energy, defence, healthcare, research, and consultancy all actively recruit physicists for their analytical and problem-solving skills. The transition from physics into data science and quantitative finance is particularly well established.

For those who wish to stay in the discipline, postgraduate study in physics, astrophysics, materials science, or computational physics is a natural route, and many graduates go on to research careers in universities and national laboratories.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of living is…
