About this course

Physics is the fundamental science, concerned with the laws that govern matter, energy, space, and time at every scale from subatomic particles to the structure of the universe. It is a discipline that combines deep mathematical reasoning with experimental investigation, producing knowledge of remarkable precision and generality, and it underpins virtually all of modern technology, from semiconductors and lasers to medical imaging, satellite communications, and energy systems. Studying physics at degree level means developing a way of thinking that is simultaneously rigorous and imaginative, building the ability to construct models, test them against evidence, and revise them when necessary.

At the University of Durham, you will study Physics over three years, full time, with a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities embedded in the programme. Durham is one of the leading centres for physics research in the UK, and the programme brings you into contact with active research in areas including particle physics, cosmology, condensed matter, and quantum information throughout your studies. The year abroad and sandwich year provide international and professional exposure that can be formative both academically and in terms of career direction.

You will develop core skills in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and mathematical methods, before specialising in advanced topics including particle and nuclear physics, astrophysics, or condensed matter, depending on your interests.
