Professional Policing

Professional policing as a degree subject takes a rigorous academic approach to what has historically been a profession entered through direct service. It asks you to think critically about crime, justice, society, and the role of the police in a democratic state, combining theoretical knowledge with the practical skills and ethical understanding that professional police work demands. The shift towards degree-level entry in policing reflects a recognition that the challenges officers face, including complex investigations, safeguarding decisions, community relations, and the use of technology and data, require the kind of analytical and reflective capacity that higher education develops.

At Bangor University this three-year full-time programme gives you a foundation in criminology, law, psychology, and the social sciences alongside specialist policing knowledge. You will explore topics including crime prevention, investigative practice, public order, ethics and accountability, and the relationship between policing and the communities it serves. You will develop the critical thinking, research skills, and professional judgement that are central to effective and ethical policing.

The academic elements of the degree are integrated with an understanding of operational policing contexts, preparing you for the realities of a demanding and diverse career.

Many graduates of professional policing degrees enter the police service, where the degree qualification satisfies the requirements for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship route or direct graduate entry in England and Wales. Others move into related fields including criminal justice, probation, border control, intelligence, and security. The analytical and investigative skills developed on the degree also transfer to roles in the public sector, social work, youth justice, and community safety.

Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in criminology, law, or public policy.
