About this course

Professional policing is a career that demands much more than procedural knowledge. The modern police officer is expected to exercise independent judgement in complex and often rapidly evolving situations, to understand the legal frameworks within which they operate, to engage sensitively with diverse communities, and to make decisions with significant ethical weight. A degree in professional policing provides the academic foundation and professional preparation to enter this career equipped with the critical thinking, ethical awareness, and contextual understanding that the role requires.

Coventry University's three-year full-time professional policing degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and professional work placement experience, giving you an unusually comprehensive range of practical and international exposure within the degree. The sandwich year and placements provide direct experience of policing and criminal justice environments, while the year abroad broadens your perspective on policing approaches, models, and cultures in other countries. You will study criminal law, evidence and procedure, policing theory, criminology, public order and community policing, investigative skills, mental health in policing contexts, and the ethics and governance of police powers.

Coventry's strong connections with regional police forces enrich the programme with professional expertise and employment pathways.

Graduates in professional policing are well prepared for careers in police forces across England and Wales, where a degree is now an increasingly expected requirement for entry. The degree also supports careers in related criminal justice roles, including border force, the National Crime Agency, probation, and private security. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in criminology, security studies, or public management, and the professional development opportunities within the police service are significant for those who pursue a policing career directly.
