Quantity Surveying

Quantity surveying sits at the financial and contractual heart of the built environment. Where architects imagine and engineers design, quantity surveyors make projects actually happen by managing costs, contracts, and risk from the earliest feasibility studies through to final account. The discipline combines technical knowledge of construction methods and materials with strong commercial judgement, legal awareness, and the ability to communicate clearly with clients, contractors, and the full project team.

It is a profession that genuinely shapes the spaces people live, work, and travel through, and one that carries real accountability for public and private money.

You will study the economics of construction projects, learning how to prepare accurate cost estimates, measure and value work as it progresses, and draft and administer contracts that protect all parties fairly. The programme covers procurement strategy, risk analysis, dispute resolution, and the regulatory frameworks that govern the industry in the UK and internationally. You will develop skills in building information modelling and the digital tools that are increasingly standard across the sector.

Alongside the technical content, you will build professional competencies in negotiation, report writing, and client management. The four-year programme at Aston University includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to understand how quantity surveying is practised in a different regulatory and market context, which is a significant advantage in a profession that operates across borders.

Graduates from quantity surveying programmes are well placed to enter a profession with consistently strong graduate employment. The most direct route is into practice with a consultancy or contractor, where you will typically work towards chartered membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Beyond private practice, quantity surveyors work in-house for major developers, government departments, infrastructure bodies, and international organisations managing large capital programmes.

With experience, routes open into project management, commercial management, development consultancy, and senior client-side roles. Further study at postgraduate level is available for those who wish to specialise in areas such as dispute resolution, facilities management, or sustainable construction economics.
