Sport and Exercise Science

Sport and exercise science applies the principles of physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition to understand how the human body responds to physical activity, and how those responses can be enhanced, managed, and promoted for health and performance. It is a discipline with both highly applied and genuinely academic dimensions, ranging from the physiological demands of elite sport to the role of physical activity in reducing the burden of chronic disease in the population. The field has grown considerably as the evidence base for exercise's effects on physical and mental health has expanded and as performance science has become more sophisticated.

At Coventry University, this three-year full-time programme allows you to apply scientific principles to enhance performance, aid recovery, and promote long-term health and wellbeing. You will study exercise physiology, sport psychology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, and research methods, developing the technical knowledge and analytical skills that professional roles in sport and exercise science demand. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to work in a relevant applied setting before your final year.

A year abroad is also incorporated, and a work placement is part of the degree. These features ensure that you graduate with substantial practical experience alongside your academic training.

You will work with data from real physical testing, learn to design and deliver exercise programmes, and develop the communication skills needed to translate scientific findings for coaches, athletes, and clients.

Graduates go on to work as sport scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, exercise physiologists, performance analysts, health and wellness coaches, and physical activity coordinators in sport organisations, NHS settings, local authorities, and the corporate wellbeing sector. Many pursue further professional qualifications or postgraduate study in sport science, physiology, physiotherapy, or public health.
