Strength and Conditioning

Strength and conditioning is the science and practice of developing athletic performance through systematic physical training. It applies principles from exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and sport psychology to design and deliver training programmes that improve strength, power, speed, endurance, and injury resilience in athletes across all sports and levels. Strength and conditioning coaches work at the intersection of sports science and practical coaching, translating research into effective training programmes that help athletes achieve their physical potential.

This four-year full-time programme at Abertay University includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study or gain experience at an international partner institution and to engage with strength and conditioning practice in a different national sporting context. With a typical tariff of 152 points, the programme is selective and attracts students with strong scientific foundations and genuine engagement with athletic performance. Abertay has strong sport science facilities and connections with sporting organisations in Scotland and beyond.

You will study the physiological bases of training adaptation, exercise biomechanics, principles of periodisation and programme design, testing and assessment methods, sports nutrition, and the evidence base for strength and conditioning practice across different athletic populations. The year abroad adds an international dimension to your training and may provide exposure to high-performance environments that are not available domestically. Practical coaching experience is central to the degree, giving you direct contact with athletes and the opportunity to develop and refine your coaching skills alongside your scientific understanding.

Graduates from strength and conditioning programmes move into careers as strength and conditioning coaches in professional and elite sport, in universities and academies, in military and emergency services contexts, and in commercial fitness settings. Positions in sport science support teams, performance analysis, and sport-specific coaching are also common pathways. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study or pursue professional accreditation through the UK Strength and Conditioning Association.
