About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics concerned with developing the mathematical and conceptual frameworks through which the physical universe is understood at its most fundamental level. It encompasses quantum mechanics, classical and relativistic mechanics, statistical mechanics, quantum field theory, cosmology, and string theory, among other areas, and it asks the deepest questions that science can ask: what are the elementary constituents of matter, what are the laws that govern their behaviour, how did the universe begin and how will it end, and why do the laws of physics have the form they do?

At University College London, the BSc in Theoretical Physics is a three-year degree that provides rigorous training in the mathematical and physical foundations of the discipline. UCL's physics department is a world-leading research environment, and the programme reflects that depth, exposing you to ideas at the frontier of the field as well as to the established foundations that underpin modern physics. You will develop exceptional mathematical ability alongside a deep conceptual understanding of physical theory, and you will learn to work with the formal tools of quantum mechanics, field theory, and mathematical physics at an advanced level.

Graduates from theoretical physics programmes at UCL are exceptionally well prepared for a wide range of careers. Many go on to postgraduate research in physics, pursuing doctoral study that contributes to the frontiers of the discipline. Others move into careers in quantitative finance, where the mathematical and problem-solving skills of a theoretical physicist are highly prized, or into data science, technology, and management consulting.
