About this course

Veterinary bioscience is the scientific foundation on which animal health and medicine is built. It is concerned with the biology of animals at the cellular, physiological and systemic levels, the mechanisms of disease, the immune response, and the scientific principles that underpin how diseases are prevented, controlled and treated. Rather than training clinical veterinarians, veterinary bioscience focuses on the science that informs veterinary medicine, preparing graduates for research, industry and applied roles across animal health, food safety and the life sciences.

At Harper Adams, the UK's leading specialist agricultural university, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of veterinary biology from the cellular level to whole-animal physiology, with a particular focus on disease mechanisms, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology and the science of animal health and welfare. Harper Adams has exceptional connections to the agriculture, food and veterinary industries, and the programme benefits from this professional context. You will develop both laboratory skills and a thorough scientific knowledge base, and the programme prepares you not only for graduate roles but also for further study, including those who wish to apply for graduate entry veterinary medicine programmes.

The scientific rigour of the degree, combined with Harper Adams's specialist environment and industry links, gives graduates a distinctive profile in a competitive sector.

Graduates move into roles in the pharmaceutical and veterinary medicines industry, agricultural research, public health and food safety agencies, animal health consultancy, government veterinary services and academic research. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study, including master's and doctoral programmes in veterinary science, microbiology, animal health or related biomedical disciplines.
