Veterinary Physiotherapy

Veterinary physiotherapy is a specialist clinical discipline concerned with the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions in animals, using techniques drawn from human physiotherapy and adapted for animal anatomy, movement, and behaviour. It is a relatively young profession but one with growing recognition, as the evidence base for manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and electrotherapy in animals has expanded considerably. Horses and dogs are the animals most commonly treated, and specialist facilities for both are central to developing clinical competence.

This four-year full-time degree at Anglia Ruskin University builds your expertise from foundational knowledge through to advanced clinical techniques, using specialist equine and canine therapy centres to give you direct experience with real animal patients. You will develop your understanding of animal anatomy, physiology, and pathology alongside the assessment and treatment skills that define veterinary physiotherapy practice. The degree combines theoretical study with extensive clinical hours, progressively building your confidence and competence as a practitioner.

You will learn to conduct thorough clinical assessments, plan and deliver rehabilitation programmes, and communicate effectively with the vets and owners who are part of every treatment relationship.

Graduates of veterinary physiotherapy programmes typically work in equine practice, small animal practice, or combination clinics, either as employees or as self-employed practitioners. Some work alongside veterinary surgeons in referral hospitals or rehabilitation centres, while others build their own client bases in private practice. The combination of technical clinical skill, animal knowledge, and professional communication that the degree develops also supports roles in teaching, research, and the development of rehabilitation products and services.
