Welsh and Journalism

Welsh and journalism is a combination that has particular significance in the context of Welsh language media. Wales has a vibrant Welsh-language culture, including S4C, BBC Radio Cymru, Welsh language newspapers and a growing digital media presence, and trained bilingual journalists who can work in both Welsh and English are in consistent demand within that sector. More broadly, the combination of language competence and journalistic training develops a distinctive set of capabilities that is valuable in Welsh-language and bilingual media contexts.

Cardiff University is the natural home for this degree, situated as it is in the Welsh capital with its strong Welsh-language culture and proximity to the major Welsh-language media organisations. This three-year full-time programme develops advanced Welsh language skills alongside rigorous journalism training. The Welsh strand develops written and oral Welsh to a high level, alongside engagement with Welsh literature, culture and the sociolinguistic context of the language in contemporary Wales.

The journalism strand covers reporting, editing, audio and video journalism, digital media production, media law and ethics and the professional practice of journalism across different platforms and formats. Cardiff's journalism school has an excellent reputation and strong industry connections, and the programme draws on both.
