Wildlife Conservation

Wildlife conservation has become one of the most urgent applied sciences of our era. Global biodiversity is under pressure from a combination of habitat loss and fragmentation, climate change, invasive species, pollution, and overexploitation, and the pace of species loss now exceeds anything in recorded human history. Responding effectively requires a rigorous understanding of ecological principles, conservation biology, land management, and the policy and governance frameworks through which conservation decisions are made.

This four-year, full-time degree at Aberystwyth University provides exactly that grounding.

You will develop an intimate understanding of the ecological concepts that underpin conservation work at local and global scales. The programme covers the biology of wildlife populations and communities, habitat ecology, species management, landscape ecology, and the practical methods used to survey and monitor flora and fauna. You will also study the social, political, and economic dimensions of conservation, recognising that protecting wildlife requires engaging with land managers, governments, local communities, and international organisations as much as understanding the science itself.

Fieldwork is central to the discipline, and Aberystwyth's location in Wales gives you access to a diverse range of habitats and wildlife, from coastal and upland environments to woodlands and wetlands.

A typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the scientific rigour of the programme. Graduates from wildlife conservation degrees go on to careers with conservation organisations and charities, national parks, environmental agencies, ecological consultancies, government departments, wildlife trusts, and international conservation bodies. Field ecologists, conservation officers, environmental impact assessors, and biodiversity managers are among the roles that graduates commonly fill.

Many continue to postgraduate study in conservation biology, ecology, environmental management, or related fields, or move into research and academic careers in biodiversity science.
