AI does a modest share of this work today
AI is used for a modest share of the day-to-day tasks in this job today. We have not yet classified what, if anything, structurally protects it, so we make no claim either way about a moat: the exposure score is the measured part. Learn the tools, and build the judgement that stays human.

The role

The work is planning and carrying out shoots, capturing the right images, then spending hours editing and delivering them, plus the business side of bookings, quotes and marketing. A good eye, technical camera skills and the ability to put people at ease matter, along with reliability and meeting clients' expectations on the day.

As a self-employed photographer you have no fixed wage, no sick or holiday pay, and income that varies with bookings and the season, often quiet at first. You invest in your own kit, work irregular hours including evenings and weekends, and spend a lot of unseen time editing and chasing work.

There are no formal qualifications required, and many learn through courses, assisting others or self-teaching, but a strong portfolio is essential. You will need your own equipment, insurance, and to register as self-employed with HMRC for tax.
