AI is used for a modest share of the day-to-day tasks in this job today. We have not yet classified what, if anything, structurally protects it, so we make no claim either way about a moat: the exposure score is the measured part. Learn the tools, and build the judgement that stays human.

The role

The work is meeting couples and planning their day, photographing the ceremony and celebrations, then spending many hours editing and delivering the images, plus running bookings and marketing. A good eye, calm under pressure and warm people skills matter, since weddings happen once with no retakes, and you must capture key moments while keeping guests at ease.

As a self-employed photographer your income comes in bursts around the wedding season, mostly weekends, with no sick or holiday pay and lots of unseen editing and admin time. The pressure is high since the day cannot be repeated, but it is creative, joyful and rewarding work, and you invest in your own kit and backup gear.

There are no required qualifications, but a strong portfolio, the right equipment, backups and insurance are essential, and many start by assisting experienced wedding photographers. You register as self-employed with HMRC and build your business through your portfolio, reviews and referrals.
