The Role & Expectations
As a grave digger, you prepare the ground where people are buried. You dig graves to the right depth and size, following the rules and the wishes of the family. You make sure the area is safe and calm, and you handle everything with care and respect.
The work is physical - you use tools and sometimes machinery to dig and maintain the burial grounds. You will work in all weather, and the job can be tiring. You may meet families during difficult moments, so being calm and respectful is important. You also keep the cemetery looking well-kept and may help coordinate with funeral directors to make sure the burial goes smoothly.
Daily Responsibilities
- Digging graves to specified dimensions and depths
- Preparing burial sites by ensuring proper drainage and soil conditions
- Coordinating with funeral directors and families regarding burial arrangements
- Maintaining cemetery grounds, including landscaping and general upkeep
- Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations during all operations
