BA Acting
About this course
Acting is the craft of inhabiting other lives convincingly, transforming written text or improvised material into believable human experience for an audience. It demands physical and vocal control, imaginative empathy, the ability to collaborate and the psychological resilience to perform under pressure and handle rejection with equanimity. At Coventry University, this three-year full-time degree develops the technical foundations of performance alongside the creative and critical understanding that sustains a professional career in theatre, film, television and other performance contexts. You will train in the core disciplines of the actor's craft, including voice and speech work, movement and physical theatre, character development, text analysis and rehearsal technique. You will work on a range of performance styles from classical and contemporary theatre to screen acting and devised work, developing versatility alongside technical skill. The programme includes performance opportunities throughout, allowing you to build a body of practical work and the experience of performing for real audiences. Collaborative working is central to theatrical practice, and the degree develops your ability to function effectively as part of an ensemble as well as to take individual creative risks. A typical entry tariff of around 120 points is expected. Acting graduates work in theatre, television, film, radio, voiceover and the broader creative industries, and many develop portfolio careers that combine performance with related work in directing, writing, teaching, community arts or arts administration. The transferable skills the training develops, particularly communication, teamwork, adaptability and confidence under pressure, are also valued in fields well beyond performance itself. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study at drama school level or in theatre-making and directing.
