BA Architecture
About this course
Architecture is the discipline concerned with the design of the built environment: the creation of buildings, spaces and places that are simultaneously functional, structural, beautiful and socially meaningful. It is one of the longest-established professions and one of the most demanding, requiring graduates to develop skills in design, technical knowledge, environmental science, history and theory, materials, structure and digital representation alongside the capacity to communicate complex spatial ideas to clients, engineers and planners. The process of becoming an architect in the UK takes several years beyond the first degree, making the undergraduate programme the foundation of a long professional formation. At Manchester Metropolitan University you will study architecture through the Manchester School of Architecture, an internationally recognised collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Manchester. As a student you are enrolled at both universities and your degree certificate is endorsed by both institutions, reflecting the dual academic grounding that the programme provides. You will develop design skills through studio projects, supported by teaching in technology, structures, environmental systems, history and theory, and the professional dimensions of architectural practice. The typical tariff of 168 reflects the technical and creative demands of a programme where both rigorous analytical thinking and spatial design ability are required from the outset. Graduates of architecture programmes who wish to qualify as architects in the UK proceed to further postgraduate study and professional practice experience, eventually obtaining RIBA Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications. Many practice as architects in design studios, with major practices, in the public sector and for specialist consultancies. Others apply their design, technical and analytical skills in related fields including urban design, interior architecture, project management, conservation, sustainability consultancy and the built environment professions more broadly. The Manchester School of Architecture's reputation provides strong graduate connections to the profession nationally and internationally.
