MSci Data Science
About this course
Data science has become one of the defining disciplines of contemporary life, drawing on statistics, computer science and domain knowledge to extract meaningful insight from the vast quantities of information that modern organisations generate and collect. The questions data scientists ask are diverse, ranging from predicting customer behaviour and optimising logistics to detecting disease patterns and training machine learning models, but the underlying skills remain consistent: the ability to gather, clean, interrogate and communicate data with rigour and clarity. At Coventry University, you will explore how data can be used to address real-world challenges, gaining hands-on experience in areas such as artificial intelligence, analytics and programming. The programme is four years full time and includes both a sandwich year in industry and a year abroad, making it one of the more structurally rich options available at this level. The placement year gives you the opportunity to apply your skills in a professional setting before your final year, building the professional network and industry context that many employers look for. Combined with the year abroad, you develop the adaptability and cross-cultural competence that international technology roles increasingly demand. Work placements are integrated throughout, reinforcing the applied, employability-focused character of the degree. Graduates from data science programmes move into roles across technology, finance, healthcare, retail, government and media, working as data analysts, data engineers, machine learning engineers, business intelligence developers and research scientists. The breadth of sectors that depend on data-driven decision-making means employment prospects are strong and varied. Further study at postgraduate level is also a natural progression, particularly for those drawn to research in artificial intelligence, statistical modelling or specialist domain applications such as bioinformatics or financial analytics. The programme's typical entry tariff is 120 points.
