BSc Environmental Geography
About this course
Environmental geography examines one of the most urgent relationships in the contemporary world: the interaction between human societies and the natural environment they depend on and transform. It asks how the physical processes of climate, hydrology, and ecology shape the conditions of human life, and how human activities, from agriculture and urbanisation to energy production and consumption, are altering those conditions in ways that pose profound challenges for present and future generations. It is a discipline that brings together natural science and social science, and it is urgently relevant. At York St John University, this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year and is built around the conviction that studying the effect of human activity on the planet is more relevant now than ever before. You will develop your understanding of physical processes and ecosystems alongside the social, economic, and political drivers of environmental change, learning to communicate the importance of these issues to a range of audiences. A sandwich year, year abroad option, and work placement opportunities are all available, giving you professional experience in environmental organisations, research contexts, or international settings during your studies. Graduates are well-placed for careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, urban and rural planning, sustainability management, environmental monitoring, community engagement, and public sector environmental roles. Many work in environmental agencies, local authorities, NGOs, and research organisations, contributing to the evidence and advocacy that effective environmental policy depends on. Others move into roles in education, journalism, or business sustainability. Postgraduate study in environmental geography, environmental management, or climate policy is another route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
