BSc Environmental Science
About this course
Environmental science is a genuinely interdisciplinary field that draws on biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and social science to understand the complex systems that support life on earth and the ways in which human activity is altering those systems. From climate change and biodiversity loss to air and water quality, soil degradation, and the management of natural resources, environmental science addresses the most urgent sustainability challenges of our time with a combination of scientific rigour and policy awareness. At Aberystwyth you will study the major environmental issues of our time in a setting that offers both an outstanding natural environment and a strong tradition of environmental research. The programme covers ecology, earth systems, atmospheric science, water resources, soil science, geographic information systems, and the policy and management frameworks through which societies respond to environmental challenges. You will develop practical skills in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation alongside the theoretical understanding that environmental science requires. Aberystwyth's location in mid-Wales, close to diverse ecosystems including coastline, upland, and agricultural land, provides a rich context for field-based learning. Graduates pursue careers in environmental consultancy, government agencies, conservation organisations, water and energy utilities, planning and development, environmental education, and research. The ability to understand environmental systems scientifically and to engage with the policy processes through which they are managed is in demand across both the public and private sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in environmental management, ecology, earth sciences, or related fields.
