BSc Environmental Sciences
About this course
Environmental sciences is a field concerned with understanding the complex interactions between human societies and the natural systems they depend on, and with developing the scientific basis for addressing the environmental challenges that now confront us at every scale. It draws on ecology, chemistry, geology, geography, and social science to examine how ecosystems function, how human activities affect them, and what can be done to manage and restore them effectively. At the University of Brighton, this three-year, full-time programme prepares you to understand and address the science behind climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation, and to develop solutions for a more sustainable future. You will study environmental chemistry, ecology, earth sciences, and environmental policy alongside the research methods and analytical skills needed to investigate these questions rigorously. A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you professional experience in an environmental organisation, research institution, or consultancy, and work placement opportunities are also integrated throughout. Brighton's location on the south coast of England, with access to diverse coastal, urban, and rural environments, provides a rich setting for applied environmental learning and fieldwork. Graduates go on to careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, ecological surveying, environmental monitoring, sustainability management, planning, public health, and policy. Government agencies, local authorities, environmental NGOs, research institutions, and private sector organisations across many industries are significant employers. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, sustainability, or a related specialist field, building on the scientific foundation the undergraduate degree provides.
