BSc Human Geography
About this course
Human geography is the branch of geography concerned with the study of human societies, cultures and economies in relation to the physical and spatial environments they inhabit. It examines how people organise themselves across space, how they use and transform the land, how cities and regions develop, how inequality and power are distributed geographically, and how global processes of trade, migration, climate change and urbanisation shape places and communities. The discipline is both empirical and critical, combining data analysis and fieldwork with theoretical frameworks drawn from the social sciences and humanities. At Cardiff University, this three-year programme emphasises the relevance of human geography to the real world of policy, planning and public life. You will develop the knowledge and analytical tools to understand how geographical processes shape society, and you will learn how to apply that knowledge to influence the views and actions of elected decision-makers, the voluntary sector and industry in order to improve communities and environments. The programme develops quantitative and qualitative research skills, spatial analysis and the ability to communicate geographical findings clearly to different audiences. Cardiff's location in Wales gives you a distinctive regional context alongside access to broader UK and international comparisons. Human geography graduates pursue careers in town and country planning, local and central government, environmental and social consultancy, international development organisations, non-governmental organisations, teaching, research and a range of commercial roles. The combination of analytical skills, knowledge of social and environmental systems, and ability to work with data makes human geography graduates valuable across public and private sectors. Many go on to postgraduate study in human geography, urban planning, development studies, environmental policy or social research, particularly those interested in academic careers or specialist policy roles.
